Our First Family Vacation!

We had the best time on our first family vacation to the Wisconsin Dells!  We stayed at the Wilderness Resort and it was very fun :)
Ben wasn't so sure about Monty the Moose...

Day One:
We arrived at the Wisconsin Dells and went straight to the Pirates Cove Adventure Golf!  Pirates Cove is a family tradition for the Badtke's, so this was a lot of fun.

There is a picture of me in this chair when I was like 8, heck if I can find it now.

Next we stopped at Walmart to pick up food for the hotel room, then we checked into our hotel.  After unpacking, we got ready to Swim!

After a few hours of water fun, we closed out the park and headed back to our room with the intention of renting a movie and ordering a pizza.  We ordered our pizza from Sarento's as well as some tiramisu and a cannoli, yum!  The movie, however, was ridiculously over-priced, so we put "Wreck-It Ralph" on for the kids on the laptop (since there was no DVD player in the room).  We are so glad that we brought the laptop and that we brought our own movies... we had promised a movie to the kids on the way back to the room and it was the only thing keeping Elena from a total meltdown (as she got tired and ready for bed, she wasn't so sure about this staying-at-the-hotel thing).

Day Two:
We woke up rather early (by vacation standards) to go to the Ken-Ducky Derby.  This is an activity they do every morning for the kids.  Each kid picks a small rubber ducky and their name is then written on the bottom.  All the duckys go into a basket together, then after a countdown, they get dumped into the lazy river.  They flow with the current to where the kids are waiting at the finish line.  Neither Elena's nor Ben's won, but they still had fun and got to keep their duckys.

After the races, we headed to the Arcade. After lots of fun, and lots of wasted money, it was back to the room for the kids' naps.  After the kids were refreshed, we headed down to the Polka Dot Pots shop in the hotel.  This is a make-your-own pottery shop. We made a plate with our hand prints on it for our house, and one for each set of grandparents.

This photo was taken before they were baked and sealed,
so they are much brighter now that they are finished.

These plates took FOREVER! After we finally finished these projects, we hit the waterpark again, but only for an hour.  We had dinner at Survivor which was at the hotel, and headed off to bed.

Day 3:
We woke up and went to the hotel's breakfast buffet, after discovering that they serve instant coffee, we stopped by the Starbucks next store to get a proper charge-up.  We quickly headed back to the pottery shop to pick up our plates because we were very excited to see how they turned out.  We were very pleased with the final product!  We intended to go do some more swimming at this point, but there seemed to be a medical emergency in the indoor section that we were hoping to swim in, so we played in this amazing 4-story tall Play Park while waiting for the waterpark to reopen.

We then hit the waterpark again and headed back to the room for naps (all of us).  After naps, we got dressed up and headed to Fields for dinner.  This was our much anticipated, splurge, fancier dinner.  The kids were very well-behaved and quiet, so much so that a nearby table complimented them on their way out. After our delicious meals, we headed back to the room.  We popped "Pippi Longstocking" into the laptop this night.

Day 4:
We've been waiting all week to ride on the "Wisconsin Dells Ducks" and this was the morning.  Luckily, our hotel had Duck pick-up right in our parking lot. So we hopped on at our hotel, and got dropped off back at the hotel afterward!

It was a little chilly, but nothing that light jackets didn't take care of.  The kids had a lot of fun going from land to water and back to land again.

We even saw some beautiful deer and other wildlife!

When we arrived back at the hotel, we finished watching "Pippi Longstocking" from the night before.  We were wasting time until we could go Tie-Dye t-shirts.  Elena chose her own Tie-Dye design, and her own colors!  We made a shirt for Ben, too.  After we finished the shirts, we headed off to the Wisconsin Dells Mining Company.

Elena had a lot of fun finding all the treasures in the sand.
Unfortunately, Ben only wanted to eat the sand.

After the mining, we drove through Dairy Queen for ice cream, and headed back to the hotel for a family nap.  When we awoke, we went back to the arcade to play more games and cash in all our points for prizes. Elena got a stuffed piggy, among other useless junk and candy.  We also came home with a giant bouncing ball (almost the size of a fitness ball), which was very tricky to fit into the car when packing to head home. We tried many times to win a ball from this giant crane game, to no avail.  A group of boys won ball after ball after ball from this machine, and one of these boys gave one to Elena.  It was quite adorable.

Day 5:
We woke up and packed as quickly as we could to make it out by check-out time.  After Sean very strategically packed every inch of the car, with Elena and I supervising from the balcony of our room (Elena encouraged him from afar by yelling, "Juh bob, Dad. Joh bob!" aka Good job, Dad. Good job!), we took a horse-drawn wagon ride.

This was our last day in the Dells and the first day that it didn't rain!

We then headed to the last waterpark of Wilderness that we had not already encountered.  There are 3 indoor and 3 outdoor parks all within walking distance and all connected by sky-way walks (There is 1 more indoor and 1 more outdoor, but you need to drive to get there, so we didn't even try to go there).  It was a little chilly, but the water was warm enough to make it more comfortable.

Kids fast asleep on the drive home... and that giant bouncing ball, in the only place it would go.

The things Elena says... (part 2)

Oopies- Oopsies
Tooties- cookies
Wimming or simming- swimming
Wimming poop- swimming suit
Awight- Alright (accompanied by a sigh and tiny eye roll when she's been told "No" to something)
Tee per ter- cucumber
peeter beeter sammich- peanut butter sandwich
Teetee beh-o- Tinkerbell

Another favorite is when she asks to watch this particular Nickelodeon dvd with several different episodes of shows. She will say, "me dawch Doh-er, me dawch Max an Wooby, me dawch deh-o bihoo, we dawch boos coos." Which means, "me watch Dora, me watch Max and Ruby, me watch Little Bill, me watch Blues Clues." The best part of this sentence is the inflection or lilt pattern that she uses. She says everything in a lower tone until the last syllable of every show and that goes up in a sing-songy way.

Dat not Funny!
Mommy, I lub dis Church! (love this church) (back for a visit at Chapel on the Hill)
Oh, Tank you Mommy! Tank you!
PAPOOSE! (From the Shirley Temple movie, Susannah of the Mounties, she yells it at Ben)
Dis my tage! -This is my stage (standing on a stool or hiding in the closet using the doors as curtains)
Me shy- I'm being shy
Wait a minute...!
Mommy, you my bess fwend (best friend).
Oh, I sorry I do dat!
"Rain, rain, go away, come again another time!"

Elena: We go Chuck E. Cheese?
Sean: No, its too far away.
Elena: We get in car, Daddy, we drive there.

We made up a lame knock-knock joke for Elena to learn.  It's supposed to go: "Knock-knock", "Who's there?", "Ba Ba", "Ba Ba Who?", "Babaloo" (BaBa like bottle) (Babaloo like the Ricky Ricardo song)
She says, "Knock-knock"
we say, "who's there?"
She jumps straight to,"Baba-doo!"

Possibly the proudest moment thus far, Elena has now learned our entire night time prayer:
Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray, the Lord, my soul to keep
Guide me safely through the night, and wake me with the morning light... Amen!

"Now I day down a sweep, I pway da Ward, mine so ta teep
Dide me savey to da nie, and wait me wit da mowing yite... Amen!"

Ben's tricks are few, but adorable...
MEH (short and loud)- Amen! (after he folds his hands together and waits for his cue)
Tay-too- thank you
DOH (short and loud)- NO! (usually only used when he sees any dog)
*High-5*
*waves bye-bye* palm faces his face, he shakes his outstretched hand side to side.
*dancing* used to be only bouncing up and down, bending at the knees. Now it is spinning around!

**Signs**- Hi & Bye (the same wave), milk (to him, this sign means "milk" and "I want"), all done (signs correctly when asked, but rarely uses it in the correct context on his own), claps (when proud or others clap), folds hands to pray, Thank you (lifts hand toward his ear, then drops it down again), I Love You! (looks like Hi & Bye).

Benjamin's first trip to the Dentist (Elena's second trip)!

Today was Benjamin's first trip to the Dentist!  He did so well with big sister Elena by his side.  Elena was a little hesitant to go to the Dentist this morning, but knowing that she had to help Ben learn what to do at the Dentist helped her find the motivation. She did very well. She sat in the chair and let the hygienist lower the back, she then said "Ah" so the hygienist could count and brush her teeth.  She got tense when the floss came out though.  We only use the mini-flossers at home, so she wouldn't let the hygienist use the regular floss. Then it was Ben's turn...  He also did well, even opened his mouth when the hygienist said "open" or "Ah". Elena got more tense when Dr. Reed came in, so she sat on Mommy's lap and leaned back on Dr. Reed, but both she and Ben did great for this part too.  Sean and I switched the kids back and forth between us playing musical laps.  We are so proud of both of them and they are super happy with their new loot!

Elena got a toothbrush with Tiana (from the Disney movie "Princess and the Frog") on it and Benjamin got a toothbrush with Winnie the Pooh on it.  Elena also got a Tiana sticker; Ben got a Diego sticker.  They got some kids' toothpaste (which Elena still can't use because she can't understand the concept of not swallowing the toothpaste or water... when she tries to spit, she just makes the sound), and some little flossers.

They also got to pick from the "Treasure Chest".  Elena picked a rainbow colored snap-on bracelet and Ben picked a little orange ball.  Both Benjamin and Elena (and Mommy) had great cleanings and check-ups! Until March, our mouths are A-OK and squared away!

The things Elena says...

I have decided that this time of toddlerhood goes by so quickly, and I don't want to forget all of the cute ways that Elena pronounces words.  So, I'm taking this time to document the funniest, cutest, and most memory-worthy words or phrases.

The best one, which makes Sean and I giggle every time she says it is......Hungry!
Elena pronounces it like "horny".  We keep trying to get her to get the "G" sound in there, but no luck yet.  It's even funnier if you understand the sign language that accompanies this word.  The sign for "horny" is the same as "hungry", but is repeated whereas with "hungry" it is only one motion.  So, even when she signs "hungry", she looks like she could be signing and saying the other word... cracks us up every time!

Ben's 1st Birthday! (Spring Break Part 3)

How did I forget to post about Ben's birthday?  Well, going through all our pictures I realized that I had not shared yet about this blessed event.

Benjamin Sean Walker
Born March 24, 2012 at 6:56pm at Home!
9 lbs 1oz, 20 1/2" long

On Saturday, March 23rd, during our Spring Break time in Wisconsin, we had Benjamin's 1st Birthday party at Sean's parents house in Delavan, WI (which is where we lived before we moved to Dubuque).  It was a very nice time with friends and family!

Ben was asleep for the first part of his party

There was a photo album of Ben's first year

When Ben finally woke up, it was CAKE TIME!!!

Most of the guests had to leave to get prepared for the performance of The Living Passion that evening so most people missed out on the best part.  Ben's own FIRST CAKE!!!

His actual birthday was on Sunday, March 24th, so he wore his Birthday Boy button to church!

I can't believe that Benjamin is already ONE YEAR OLD.  Time sure flies... now he's walking and getting such a mischievous little personality.  We're so excited to see what this next year will bring for him and the person he will form into being.  One thing is for certain, no matter what... he will be loved!
